The Old Tapu Village School
For almost 30 years this rammed earth building served as the one room
classroom for these village children.
Old Toilet
This existing open pit toilet was not only unhygienic, but also dangerous.
Dark Classroom
The old building had only one small window for lighting and no electricity.
Some students walk 2 hours each way to get to class each day.
Group Effort
Local parents helped haul materials and help in the construction process.
Horse Power
Hauling with horse carts is still very common here. These little ponies are
stout and gentle.
New Building Site
The new school is built next to the old. Afterwards, the old building was
demolished to make room for the school yard.
Good Foundation
It all starts with a solid foundation. In the advent of several recent
earthquakes, the China education department mandates all new construction
be earthquake resistant.
Better Lighting
The new building incorporates larger windows for better lighting. There’s still
only one classroom for 1st - 3rd graders plus a teacher’s office.
Proud New Owners
These families eagerly awaited the opening of their new school. Seeing the
safe construction and better facilities, many additional families began sending
their children to school.
Ready for Classes
Currently about 35 students attend classes daily at their new school.
