JinXing School Toilet
The Jinxing school toilet building is mostly complete. After a few finishing
touches the students will begin using the new facility.
A few advantages of the new toilet include better ventilation to control flies that
transmit disease, a hand wash station, and a dual-pit composting design that
will allow one pit to compost for over a year while the other pit is in use. After
the composting period is complete the “black soil” will be safe for use on local
crops. The result will be a more hygienic system.
Toilet Building
The new toilet building is a ventilated, improved, pit toilet (VIP). It’s designed
to minimize odors inside the building by maintaining a constant airflow through
the building, down into the pit, and up through the vent pipes.
Improved Hygiene
The new handwash station will allow students to wash hands immediately after
leaving the toilet.
Fly Control
Another aspect of the design is the control of flies and insects. The heavily
screened entrances minimize flies entering the toilet. Flies are attracted to
odor, so they enter the pit. Once inside the pit they lay their eggs and try to
escape, but the only good light source to attract them is up the vent pipes
which are screened. Most flies will die here.
Ample Space
The new building is sized to provide stalls for boys and girls. The students
have little time between classes to use the toilet, so more space is important.
Cleaning
Cleaning of the toilet is important and the walls and floors will be easy to clean.
Ventilation
A steady flow of air is important in the VIP toilet design. The large vent stacks
induce good ventilation.
Vent Design
The vents are designed to induce airflow even when winds are low. The tee
design functions better during times when wind movement is low. The bug
screens help trap flies inside the vent and pit.
Access
The new toilet building is accessible to both classrooms and dormitories.
Students
The work is all about the students and their health.
